Three Generations of Springfield Wiring
The 1940s bungalows near downtown are the oldest of the three. Plenty still have cloth-insulated knob-and-tube in the walls and two-prong outlets with no ground, fed by a 60-amp fused box that ran out of room decades ago. A modern kitchen full of countertop appliances asks more of that wiring than it was ever built to carry. The brick ranches in Westgate are the middle generation: 100-amp panels (some from a brand later found unsafe), aluminum branch wiring at the receptacles, and backstabbed devices that work loose and arc behind the plate. Out along the Route 9 corridor, the newer homes have plenty of capacity but the opposite trouble: finished basements and additions hung off an overloaded subpanel, with the AFCI and GFCI protection that today’s code wants either missing or never added.
We see the pattern every year: ungrounded circuits in the Mill District, loose aluminum connections near Orchard Hills warming up under load, and tripping AFCI breakers in the open builds off Route 9. Knowing which generation your house comes from is half the diagnosis.
